BabyStork

Yup, The Time is nearing and our baby boy is on his way. I admit that giving birth to to a little person safely and with minimal complication is now consuming my thoughts. We have some wonderful doulas on deck, books have been read, fancy breathing has been practiced. Focal points. Aromatherapy. Etc. Etc. Etc. Surely I will get through this? Only a trillion other women have.

The weird thing is that I like to imagine myself doing this with a sense of humor. Of course, I know that actually laughing my way through childbirth is very very unlikely. Extremely unlikely. I figure, at the very least, I can laugh about it beforehand, and maybe laugh about it afterwards (?), however it plays out. (I am fully preparing myself for earth-shattering shrieking, flying body parts and geysers of bodily fluid.) I’m also tempering my nightmares with a good dose of denial by hoping that the baby isn’t too heavy for the stork, that he has good directions to our front stoop, and his handkerchief cradle doesn’t break in flight.

Anyway, many have suggested bringing music to the hospital. Indeed, I believe that most experiences in life should have soundtracks, so I have been giving the playlist a great deal of thought. But it’s impossible to know if I’ll want calming, meditative music or more uplifting, inspirational tunes. Undecided, I have decided to go with…funny. Here I present my extremely eclectic birth mix, so far. Who knows if it will help me, annoy me or even get played at all, but for now it’s making me laugh…

1. White Stripes, My Doorbell:

2. Salt-N-Pepa, Push It:

3. The Doors, Break on Through (To the other Side)

4. John Mellencamp, Hurts so Good:

5. CeCe Peniston: Finally

Any other ideas? I am taking submissions.

  1. Ha. Seriously, you should market this as the soundtrack to child birth. No worries. That baby is coming regardless of breathing techniques and doulas. You’ll be great, I’m sure πŸ™‚

  2. Jocelyn,
You will approach giving birth as an athlete. What kind of an athlete where you? Did you whine when things got tough? No. Did you cry when you got hurt and say you couldn’t keep going? Absolutely not. Did you work through the hard training? Yes. Did you smile throughout every performance? YES YOU DID. Easy-peasy. πŸ™‚

  3. You know how I feel about music… there should be a soundtrack for everything you do! Baby birthin’ is no exception!! LOVE your selections.
    How about:
    Diana Ross: “I’m Coming Out”
10,000 Maniacs – “Eat for Two”
The Ramones- “I Wanna Be Sedated” (like immediately!)
Queen- “I want to Break Free”
    Europe – “The Final Countdown”
And for big fun…. to get the party started and the doctors and nurses really pumped ….” WHOOP THERE IT IS”
HILARIOUS! I guess some of this shows my age!
So excited for you both. And when he’s born of course… Some Simple Minds “Alive and Kickin”!
This is the best Christmas present ever! A sweet little boy who will no doubt “rock” your world. xoxo

    • I KNEW you would be able to bust out some good ones DJ Stacey!
Diana Ross: YES! Need some disco.
Maniacs: Can’t believe I forgot this one! Always loved them.
      Sedated: Indeed and ASAP.
Queen: didn’t know this song – just watched the video, so funny.
The Final Countdown – yup, and hopefully my hair will look as crazy as theirs. πŸ™‚
Whoop there it is – ha ha ha ha! Rob and I just had a good laugh over that one.
      Alive and Kicking – Perfect!
All these are going on the official mix – THANK YOU πŸ™‚

  4. You gotta have “breathe” (Anna nalik or Michael w smith). I had both on my ‘delivery day’ mix ;). Unfortunately I have to concur that ‘ring of fire’ is completely appropriate ;). Fortunately, it will be over before you know it.

  5. So exciting! Here’s my contribution: “Push” by Matchbox Twenty, “Shake It Out” by Florence & The Machine, “So Hard” by Dixie Chicks, “What Doesn’t Kill You (Stronger)” by Kelly Clarkson, “I’m Not Perfect” by Laurie Berkner, “Turn You Inside Out” by R.E.M., and on a cornier note, “Lucky” by Jason Mraz. That was too much fun. HAVE AN AMAZING BIRTH!

    • These are all great, Runaway Mama! I sure hope this does make me stronger (if it doesn’t kill me) and that I’ll be able to shake him out πŸ™‚ Love that Mraz song!! Awww. πŸ™‚

THANK YOU for the songs and the well wishes πŸ™‚

  6. I actually laughed out loud at the Salt N Pepa song… I tried to think of some good addition… but I always freeze at that sort of thing and then have the perfect suggestion days later when it’s no longer applicable.

Besides, I don’t think I could compete with Stacey’s mix… Although Ring of Fire is delightfully terrifying.

    How are you feeling?

    • I know – Ring of Fire is great and horrible. I’m getting some pretty great suggestions via Facebook too…funny!

Feeling good…getting big, breathing hard, hands-n-feet are swelling, so I guess all is on track πŸ™‚

  7. Bruce’s “Born in the USA”…and Lynaryd Skynard’s “Free Bird”, and my personal fav… “Born to be wiiiiiiiild!!!” Steppenwolf. -These are the best times of your life. Enjoy and sending courage and love.

  8. Mercy by Duffy
Baby one more time by Britney Spears
I’m coming out by Norious BIG
All that she wants by Ace Of Bass
I come from a land down under by Men at Work
Who needs sleep by Barenaked Ladies

  9. I’m not about to give birth to a human creature like Ms. Home Tome, but those play list suggestions are just making me feel like birthin’ something! I was affected badly by Storm Sandy – our house was severely damaged by a giant oak tree – so I think I’m going to have to create my own play list for helping to birth our extensive house renovations as well as creative projects that were put on hold. Great selections everyone! And I am going to keep thinking about what else I can suggest – I’m still half asleep…

    • I think you are about about to birth the most amazing kitchen-sunroom ever! (or at least watch it get born with someone ELSE’s blood sweat and tears…) Surely there will be a good playlist for that… πŸ™‚

  10. It’s funny that I just read this post today. I have to have breast reduction surgery a week from today. I’ve never had surgery before so I decided to approach my anxiety with humor and made a funny playlist too. My songs have a different theme though, but a few that made my list are Defying Gravity from Wicked and You Raise Me Up by Josh Groban. Oregano thought I was a bit nuts for constructing the playlist and when he heard, I’ve Got You Under My Skin he figured I was certifiable.

How about Brave by Idina Menzel for your playlist?

  11. This was hilarious. Especially all the comments! πŸ™‚

Did you say when you’re due? I can’t remember. Best wishes to you though! Let us know how that playlist works for ya. πŸ˜‰

  12. This is too funny, I love the idea!! A suggestion would be anything with the word “baby ” in it. Although used in a slightly different context, I think Justin Bieber may have a few songs with this word. Not that I would know.
